Conversations and Coffee Hour: Week 4

Hello All,

Thanks to everyone that came out to Conversations and Coffee Hour despite the rain. I think we had a very informative conversation. The next meeting will be about immigration reform. There is a push to change the distribution of what type of immigrants are going to be accepted into the US each year. The change will lower the proportions of reunification immigration to increase the proportion of skilled workers. Below is the link to that article. I think that the last discussion we had was great. I learned a lot about Wisconsin's health care and about the personal stories and issues that are in our group. From the feedback of last week's meeting I think that we want to stay on the subject of health care for one more week but to have it more policy orientated. So below is an op-ed from the Wall Street Journal that I thought we can discuss. So come with your agreements or disagreements and lets discuss it.

Discussants are experts in Asian American Studies and will examine the numerous and newly re-examined aspects of the Japanese American Internment along legal, cultural, gendered, and social dimensions. This discussion will also touch upon the gendered cultural dynamics that shape the portrayal of Japanese American women after World War II.

Day 3: “The Badger State Reclaims its Forgotten Asian American Heritage: Remembering James Wakasa”

DESCRIPTION: A memorial service for internment casualty and former University of Wisconsin student, James Wakasa. The service will honor and commemorate Mr. Wakasa’s life and acknowledge Wisconsin Asian Americans who had witnessed the internment and related events that resonate with this theme.

BACKGROUND
James Wakasa was born in Japan in 1884, and immigrated to the American Midwest during his teenage years. He attended Hyde Park High School in Chicago and eventually completed a two-year post graduate course at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1916. Working as a cook, he lived in Iowa and became a U.S. Army cooking instructor during the First World War. He eventually moved to San Francisco where in 1942, Wakasa and other innocent Americans of Japanese descent (including second and third American generation children) were forcibly removed from their homes, rounded up and sent to the Tanforan Assembly Center, then to Topaz, the War Relocation Authority camp in Utah.

On April 11, 1943, Wakasa was shot to death by a military police sentry. At the time of his death, he had been in the US for forty years. The act of remembering the life of James Wakasa, acknowledging the historical circumanstances of his death in the internment camp, and reflecting upon the lessons of the US internment of Japanese Americans can help inform contemporary government crimes against the civil liberties of its own citizens in the name of homeland security. The detainment of unprosecuted prisoners at Guantanamo Bay (Git-mo) and immigrant raids reported in the new today suggest that memory is history as remembered in the present day.

Spring Wine

Were you disappointed in missing our first wine tasting event? Fret not then for we have a pleasant treat for you. The powers to be have decided to kill two birds with one stone and hold another Wine as our end of the semester mixer. And why not? For what better way to usher in the start of spring and thoughts of warmer weather than to enjoy a crisp and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc from Margaret River or a light and fruity Pinot Noir from Yarra Valley?

If you're familiar with the wine-growing areas mentioned, then you probably already guessed that the focus of this Wine will be Australia. So moving from old-world wines to new-world wines, we're now going to explore everything from the grapes that put Australia on the map, Chardonnay and Shiraz, to the up and coming varietals like Pinot Noir.

Vanessa Merina has once again generously offered to hold our wine enlightenment at her place and in keeping with the spring celebration theme, weather permitting, we'll be having Wine outside on Vanessa's patio on Friday April the 17th. The plan is to start at 6:30 p.m. So bring a wine from Australia, come learn a little bit more about wine, and of course enjoy some wine outdoors in celebration of spring.

Wine

Attention fellow appreciators of wine,

You have spoken and by popular accord, the ball has been rolled into action. Wine shall be held on the 28th of February 2009 at the apartment of Vanessa Merina, whom we would like to thank for so graciously hosting us, and your presence is cordially requested. The focus of the wine shall be the country of Spain. Bring forth a bottle of Spanish wine to share and savor. The varietal matters not for we are sampling all that Spain has to offer, though Spain is better known for their reds.

Okay enough with the posh language. So what better way to close out the month of February then to have a completely relaxed and informal sampling of wines from Spain? No worries if you're new to wine for this is a nice way to start learning about wine while amongst the company of good friends. For those who aren't familiar with the vernacular, varietal means grape type, e.g. Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon (a little more about the varietals that Spain has to offer later). So just bring a bottle of Spanish wine to share and come and learn a little more about the nectar of the gods. Mostly importantly though, come and enjoy some good wine with some good company.

Some helpful tips in selecting your wine. If you're unfamiliar with a producer of Spanish wine, you could look for the special designation, Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa), Spain uses to control the quality of its wines. In theory the special designation Denominación de Origen (DO) would also indicate a quality wine, but for a while the Spanish government was handing out DO status like candy to wine-growing areas until it lost its significance.

As mentioned earlier, Spain is more known for their red wines. You'll most likely find their two native red grapes, Tempranillo and Garnacha. Spain's three major red wine growing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Penedes. Rioja is where Spain's red wine wineries started and considering its proximity to the French border it's no coincidence. A certain amount of additional age and quality go hand in hand with red Rioja wines. Some important terms to look for on the label to help you make your selection are "Crianza", "Reserva", and "Gran Reserva". Crianza refers to a wine that has undergone a total of two years of aging with a minimum of one year in an oak barrel. Reserva refers to a wine that has undergone a total of three years of aging with a minimum of one year in an oak barrel. Gran Reserva refers to a wine that has undergone a total of five years of aging with a minim
um of two years in an oak barrel.

While better known for their robust red wines, Spanish white wines have recently revealed a fresh and vibrant side. Look for white wines made from the Albariño grape in the Rías Baixas region or the Verdejo grape in the Rueda region. For the more familiar Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc look for wines from the Penedés region. Chardonnay produces a fuller bodied wine so those of you who would like a lighter bodied wine would enjoy the crisp wines produced from the Albariño grape.

This talk is about Hmong racialization, and the unintelligibility of Asian race, questions of Hmong in/hypervisibility and social consequences of these. We use the theme of violence (including symbolic and epistemic) to tie together several high profile incidents to develop an analysis of racialization.

Louisa Schein is a professor in the Department of Anthropology at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick campus. She is interested in cultural politics, ethnicity, nationalism and transnationalism. She is the author of Minority Rules: The Miao and the Feminine in China's Cultural Politics, (2000, Duke University Press.). She has researched Hmong in the U.S. and China for almost three decades and collaborated on documentary films on the Hmong.

Va-Megn Thoj directs and produces films about the Hmong and Asian-American community. A community activist as well as a filmmaker, he is a founding member of the Center for Hmong Arts & Talent, a non-profit community arts organization in St. Paul, where he has also been an instructor. He is also founder of Community Action Against Racism (CAAR) and owner of Frogtown Media Productions. He has received grants from the Bush Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, the Jerome Foundation, and the New York State Council for the Arts. He is also the recipient of a Telly Award and the 2004 Rockefeller Media Arts Fellowship.

Kabzuag Vaj's talk will draw on her personal and professional experiences with contemporary issues affecting Hmong women in Wisconsin. She is a Hmong woman who came with her family the US in 1981. She has been advocating for women and children since she was 15 years old. She founded Freedom, Inc., a grassroots organization that advocates and provides services to low and no-income communities of color in Madison, Wisconsin. She has worked on social justice issues such as welfare reform, immigration issues, youth justice, and racial profiling. In the last 8 years, she has worked on ending violence against women and children, including addressing trafficking issues/abusive international marriages and murder suicide within the Hmong community.

Critical Perspectives on Hmong Scholarship and Experiences
The focus of the speaker series is to provide a platform for scholars, community leaders, and artists from, and working with, the Hmong community to share their work with the UW-Madison campus and the Madison Hmong community.

I appreciate the opportunity to share a few thoughts with the Asian American communities that gather now to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. This is a wonderful time to reflect on the year past and look toward the year ahead.

The Mid-Autumn Festival celebrates the abundance of the summer harvest. As Americans, it is a time to celebrate our blessings and rededicate ourselves to extending the opportunity to those who lack it across our country, and around the world.

That's why I have developed detailed plans to jumpstart the economy and put us on a path to long-term economic growth and job creation, provide middle class Americans with tax relief, support small businesses, and protect homeownership. I also have plans to provide every American access to quality, affordable health care and to fix our schools. We can accomplish these goals at home, and we can rebuild our alliances, encourage individual involvement and service in the Peace Corps, and improve our foreign aid programs so that we help other countries accomplish these goals as well.

Change only happens when people demand it, so I hope you'll get involved in this election and vote on November 4th. Together as one nation, we can work together to create a better future. I wish you all the best for a wonderful celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Linda Park and I were looking up 2007-2008 statistics on "guestimates" of Asian Americans on campus to update some grant language for AAAGS.

These are just some rough figures (we don't know, however, the methodologies for how these numbers were generated or how durable the definitions have been over time).

STATISTICS:

Faculty: 216/2198 = 9.8 percent (we don't really know how accurate this is!)

Academic Staff: 509/6826 = 7.4 percent

Graduate Students (Masters and PhD non-professional school): 319/8860 = 3.6 percent

Professional School Students: 189/2080 = 9.1 percent*

* We have reason to believe that this number is inflated due to the possible inclusion of overseas graduate students. This means that the number of Asian American graduate students, as well as the number of graduate non-professional Asian American students, is actually lower than these figures would suggest.

All ethnic minorities: 861/8860= 9.7 percent

There is going to be a free ballroom dance sponsored by the ballroom club as part of their fall kick-off on Thursday, September 4. It will be in Memorial Union (room to be determined) from 7 p.m. to midnight. Also there will be free beginner lessons. BY BUS - On the weekends you can take the # 2 or 8 bus and it will drop you off on the corner of Sheboygan and Eau Claire. From there, walk about 1/2 a block West until you come to the "Monticello" sign and ahead of that is the office sign. The apartment building is also the building's office.

BY CAR - There's parking on the street in front of the building and also around it. There should be sufficient spaces for everyone. Please indicate whether you need a ride. We have drivers coming from both the East and West side of Madison.

PURPOSE: To plan the next calendar year of fun social events, mixers, and programs and of course, to get as many members involved in this program planning process as possible. AAAGS wants to serve the needs of its changing membership.

In the spring, we administered a Membership Satisfaction Survey on Survey Monkey. We'll share with you some of the highlights and the many conversations amongst steering committee members that arose thereafter at next week's retreat.

Hope the end of the semester has been treating everyone well.

We are writing because as graduation 2008 approaches, we know that many AAAGS members will be finishing degrees and moving on to new places and occupations. We definitely want to be there to cheer people on at upcoming ceremonies and have heard many AAAGS members express interest as well. In lieu of this, we are gathering the names of those who are graduating and make them available to the group for those who would like to attend a ceremony or just send their best wishes for the future.

If you are finishing a degree this year and/or walking at a ceremony next week and would not mind being included in a list that will be sent to the group, please respond to uw.aaags@gmail.com with your name, degree, department, and, if you are walking, the time of your ceremony. just wanted to let you know that AAAGS will again be hosting a "Movie and Meal event". This year, we've selected "New Year Baby" showing on Sunday April 6th at 12:45pm at the Chazen Museum. We will plan a brunch meal prior to the movie--place and time TBD. If time is an issue you can do one or the other (eat with folks and not watch movie or not eat but come watch movie)... We've got 20 FREE tix for this movie. First come, first serve, so reply quickly!

The Asian American film fest is on April 3-6 (it is part of the Wisconsin Film Festival). There are 4 films this year: New Year Baby, Man of Hula, Hollywood Chinese, and Tie a Yellow Ribbon. Mixed Race Asians: Why They Matter to Asia America

We are pleased to announce this year's Asian American Voices event on Saturday, April 5. The event will feature an afternoon of break-out sessions on such topics as Multiracialism and Health, Multiracial Asian American Activism, and Mixed Race Identity, followed by a casual dinner. The evening will conclude with a performance by multiracial Asian American multimedia artist Kate Rigg.

The opening remarks and keynote address are currently scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School. Kate Rigg's performance will begin at 8:15 p.m. at 3650 Humanities.

Informally, the friendships formed through first-time connections established at AAAGS events have flourished in a number of important and innovative ways. Graduates have formed study groups together at various libraries on campus, gathered for documentary film screenings and holiday meals (if they couldn't be home for out-of-state students), and coffeehouse chit chat.

AAAGS is also wired -- literally. Our online networking group "UW AAAGS" Facebook group at this time is at 60 members -- current grad students and affiliates (staff, alumni, and ugrad allies).

As Co-Chair, I am stepping down in the spring to do overseas predissertation fieldwork, however, the existing corps of executive committee members is unrivaled in their dedication, commitment, and solidarity to the academic, social, and community goals of AAAGS. Thank you especially to Linda Park, Chair in 2006-2007, for her dedication to re-chartering AAAGS and for advising the incoming Co-Chairs. I have to thank Gil Jose (Dept of Microbiology), for being such a kind and fun individual to work with as Co-Chair in Fall 2007; the devoted executive committee members who came to our meetings on Friday evenings; the contributions and solidarity with APALSA/SALSA - our colleagues in the Law School have been wonderful and involved every step of the way. To the undergrad student orgs, APAC and to the re-vamped AASU, as a group, AAAGS will be there to support the important work you will do in the near future. And best wishes to our friends at Hmong Talk. Our new Co-Chair is Casey Lee (Dept of East Asian Studies), I couldn't have asked for a more fresh and energetic replacement. Happy New Year, AAAGS!

Description: Come join us for our first-ever workshop about the practical applications to activism geared toward a broad audience of undergraduate, graduate, and community members. All are invited to attend. This will require active participation and discussion in smaller group break-out sessions on the topic of media portrayals, the impact of immigration reform, racial quotas in school admissions, and racially-motivated hate crimes facilitated by graduate students at Madison.

When: Tuesday, November 13, 2007, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Where: Helen C. White Building, Room 7191 (room holds about 100 or more)

Who: Every major Asian American student organization member and allies are welcome

What: We will be featuring local speakers and gearing this workshop toward gaining hands-on skills to advocate and talk about the issues that matter to you. The theme is "learning from each other" because we all come from different career and student leadership backgrounds and can benefit from learning from one another's activism and energy.

Speaker:

Ray Hsu is a Ph.D. candidate in English literary studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He won a Humanities Exposed Evjue Research Award for establishing a creative writing community and GED tutoring program in a prison. His first poetry collection, Anthropy, won the League of Canadian Poets’ Gerald Lampert Award and was a finalist for the Trillium Book Award for Poetry. https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/rjhsu/cv/rhbio.html. Ray will lead us in a discussion about Asian American activism.

Facilitator:

Anthony Yuen is a graduate of Education M.Ed. and Asian American Studies M.A. programs at UCLA, where he completed a video documentary thesis on multiracial Asian American arts, academics, and activism at the university's Center for EthnoCommunications. A former executive director of Hapa Issues Forum, a leading multiracial Asian American advocacy organization, Anthony currently works as an advisor for International Academic Programs at UW-Madison, where he is the lead advisor for study abroad programs to Asia.

So much of dress is tied to identity. Even in today’s “global market” the simple (or not) decision about which outfit to wear says a great deal about you. The Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection has many garments that reflect the identity of the wearer and the maker.

Kimono, the national dress of Japan, offers clear clues as to the wearer and more subtle ones from the maker. It would be easy to assume that a kimono is a kimono, with its straightforward construction, simple t-shape, and one size-fits-all nature. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Although adult kimono are uniform in size—made from one bolt of fabric, approximately 14 inches wide and a little over 12 yards long—the elegant t-shape of the garment is altered and patterned to reflect social and personal issues.

A man’s kimono is fairly straightforward: short sleeves with a square edge, often in somber hues. Colorful kimono are usually hidden under these more somber outer kimono. Women, however, have many choices when they select a kimono. A woman must take into account her marital status, the season, the occasion, and her age. The sleeve length and design of a woman’s kimono signal her age and marital status. The weave and design on the kimono can identify whether the garment is to be worn in the winter or summer, and the placement of the design is different for domestic wear, formal visits, or ceremonial occasions.

Crafting Kimono will reveal these subtle nuances and explore the materials and techniques that go into creating a kimono. Examples of kimono (wedding, formal and everyday) featuring Ro (gauze weave), Chirim (silk crepe), Shibori (tied and dyed), Kasuri (bound resist or Ikat), and Yuzen (paste resist) will be on display. Selected from the extensive holdings of the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection by its curator, Rebecca Kasemeyer, this exhibition is part of a series of biennial exhibitions showcasing the HLATC collections in the Design Gallery.

The opening reception for Crafting Kimono will take place Sunday, November 4 from 1-4 p.m. At 2 p.m. during the reception, Japanese textile scholar Dr. Mary Dusenbury will give a lecture. As acting curator of Asian art for Kansas University’s Spencer Museum of Art, Dr. Dusenbury curated the exhibition “Flowers, Dragons, and Pine Trees: Asian Textiles in the Spencer Museum of Art” in 2006. She previously served as president of the Textile Society and as adjunct research associate at the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Kansas.

The reception and lecture on November 4 follows and complements the international symposium held at the Chazen Museum of Art on November 3, Competition and Collaboration in Edo Print Culture: A New Perspective. The symposium is being held in conjunction with the opening weekend of the exhibition Competition and Collaboration: Japanese Prints of the Utagawa School held at the Chazen.

The Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection is housed in the School Human Ecology at 1300 Linden Drive on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The collection features 12,000 textiles and costumes representing countless eras, places, and techniques, making it one of the largest university textile collections in the United States. The size and scope of the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection, along with its related programs, make it an outstanding resource for scholars, designers, students, and members of the community. The mission of the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection is to provide educational resources that further the understanding of human beings within their material and social environments through the study of textiles of artistic, cultural, and historic significance.

I am in the process of setting up the Asian-American reading group. We will be reading critical theory, novels, poetry, and other texts written by or about Asian-Americans.

My hope is that we can meet monthly to discuss a schedule of texts. The tentative schedule is currently every fourth Wednesday at 3pm in Memorial Union (Lakefront on Langdon dining room).

September 26th at 3pm will be our first meeting. I will have the readings available on Learn@UW shortly.

Secret Asian Man now in syndication in Newspapers across the Country

For many years now, Tak Toyoshima has been publishing a comic Strip called Secret Asian Man. The comic explores elements of the Asian American experience in funny, ironic and poignant ways. Originally limited to small venues, like Boston's Weekly Dig and Imdiversity.com to name a few, the strip has now been syndicated by United Features Syndicates. This week, it begins to appear daily in newspapers around the country and on the internet on www.comics.com.

Move over Boondocks...This is the first-ever nationally syndicated comic strip featuring an Asian American leading character. Included in this post are two classic comics from a few years ago.
